The Biggot Strikes Back

According to the NY Times, it looks like Trent Lott of Mississippi returned to the Senate’s top ranks today, winning election as minority whip in the next session by a single vote. Yep, the Republicans are pulling all the stops out to insure that this country becomes even more divided by electing a good ol' boy. In case you forgot, Trent's downfall was back in 2002 at Storm Thurmond's (once a longtime segregationist ) 100th birthday. According to the NY Times, Lott noted at the party “I want to say this about my state, When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over the years, either.” The senator later apologized for his “poor choice of words,” . But the damage was done, and Lott lost his post.
Can you imagine how much better off this country would if all these biggots would just go away?

Yeah, if only all Republicans could be as noble as Sen. Robert Byrd, D-West Virginia.

He's got one year left on his current term. I think he's 83 years old. So hopefully he won't run again, but I'm sure he will.
