A Must See Honda Commercial
I don't know anybody who likes watching commercials, but you have to watch the latest for the Honda Accord. Before you view the commercial, read the story behind it (see below). Even if you don't believe that the commercial was shot in real time without computer animation, you have to admit, it is very cool.
The story behind the commercial:
"There are no computer graphics or digital tricks in the film. Everything you see really happened in real time exactly as you see it. The film took 606 takes. On the first 605 takes, something, usually very minor, didn't work. They would then have to set the whole thing up again. The crew spent weeks shooting night and day. By the time it was over, they were ready to change professions.
The film cost six million dollars and took three months to complete including full engineering of the sequence. In addition, it's two minutes long, so every time Honda airs the film on British television, they're shelling out big bucks. However, it is fast becoming the most downloaded advertisement in Internet history. Honda executives figure the ad will soon pay for itself simply in "free viewings." (Honda isn't paying a dime to have you watch this commercial!). When the ad was pitched to senior executives, they signed off on it immediately without any hesitation - including the costs.
There are six and only six hand-made Accords in the world. To the horror of Honda engineers, the filmmakers disassembled two of them to make the film. Everything you see in the film (aside from the walls, floor, ramp, and complete Honda Accord) are parts from those two cars. The voice over is Garrison Keillor. When the ad was shown to Honda executives, they liked it and commented on how amazing computer graphics have gotten. They fell off their chairs when they found out it was for real.
Oh, and about those funky windshield wipers. On the new Accords, the windshield wipers have water sensors and are designed to start doing their thing automatically as soon as they become wet"

Sorry to burst your bubble a little, but this ad has been around for almost three years now.
The account of the ad’s creation that’s been floating around the Internet since 2003 (and re-published here) is mostly accurate, but is off on a few points. Most are nitpicks (the ad cost $1 million, not $6 million; it took five months, not three months). But the big stickler is that the finished product consists of one take and that no CGI was used. According to Snopes.com the finished commercial is a combination of two takes that were digitally pieced together.
All that said, it is still very cool.
I kinda figured it wasn't done in real time. But like you said...it is still very cool.
Okay, so this technically isn't a comment on the ad--just a 'hello there' from Sydney, Aaron, and a big congrats on the new addition to your family! Loved the Daddy and daughter pix, very cute. It's so cool to be able to find out what people are up to through blogs and web pages (thanks to Rooney, whose page I happened to be reading when I discovered a link to yours). Anyway, happened to be thinking about those far-off Nisky High times this week. Take care and enjoy the little one! --Meryl
Hey Meryl: Good to here from you. Yes, life couldn't be better. Charlotte and my wife, Chris, are both doing great. Charlotte is growing every day.
